Conejo Valley Unified School District is seeking interested individuals to serve on its Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. Science. Technology. Engineering. Mathematics. It’s officially a new era in STEM learning at Westlake High School with the completion of the largest Measure I project to date in the Conejo Valley Unified School District: a beautiful, new STEM building. The ribbon was cut on the 27,000 square foot, three-story structure at a special ceremony on Monday, November 1st. Construction for the new, $14 million building began in the summer of 2020 and was completed on schedule thanks in large part to the hard work and dedication of the District’s Planning and Facilities team who acted as the general contractor for the project. The cost of the building was paid for by Measure I, a $197 million, 2014 voter-approved facilities bond.
On September 21, 2021, the Board of Education for the Conejo Valley Unified School District held a Special Board Meeting on the topic of the District’s Facilities Use Program. In a more than four-hour long discussion, the Board of Education adopted a new facility use fee schedule and updated the facility use rules and regulations, with the important overall goal of creating equity and accessibility amongst all facility user groups. Additionally, pending no major changes in COVID related guidelines, it was decided that the District will open indoor facilities for outside user groups to rent, beginning November 1, 2021.
While participating in virtual learning during the 2020-2021 school year, Newbury Park High School student Giovanni Albarez couldn’t help but look at the Measure I sticker on his CVUSD chromebook and wonder what exactly Measure I entailed and how it was more broadly benefiting students. When the opportunity arose for a member of the 2021-2022 Student District Advisory Committee (SDAC) to serve as the first student representative on the Measure I Bond Oversight Committee as Albarez puts it he “knew I was the guy for it.”
