High School Job Opportunity with CVUSD Provides Key Professional Skills

Monday through Friday after completing his daily schedule of classes at Thousand Oaks High School, senior Jaymes heads to another school. This time it’s Madrona Elementary where he once attended as a student, and where he now serves as a Child Care Assistant for the school’s after school child care program.

Jamyes with Madrona studentIn his role as Child Care Assistant, Jaymes’ core job duties include supervising the children, assisting with homework, snack preparation, cleaning classroom materials, and working as a member of a team.

Jaymes is the first CVUSD high school student to be hired in this role for the 2018-2019 school year. The after school child care program has utilized high school students successfully in the past, and is once again opening this job opportunity up to high school students in the District.

“The elementary students view Jaymes as a role model, especially since he is still in school like they are,” said Amie Mills, Director of Child Development. “He is very energetic and playful, and the students enjoy engaging with him.”

Jaymes hopes to one day pursue a career in therapy, and is looking forward to learning teamwork, coordination, and more information on child development and behaviors through his role at Madrona.

“This experience is a real life changer for me,” said Jaymes. “The friendships, and ability to influence the children into becoming stunning young boys and girls makes this experience so rewarding.”
