Banyan Elementary Hosts “We Are Thankful” Event

On the morning of Friday, November 22nd, the Banyan Elementary School community gathered for a special event to thank first responders for bravely serving, and giving back to their hometown.

The event featured the school’s annual Patriotic Assembly titled, “We are Thankful,” which included giving thanks to military service members, veterans, and first responders,  and a special check presentation to the nonprofit Give An Hour.

Fifth grade teacher Brynn  Hutchinson created a #ThousandOaksStrong design last year, featuring an oak tree with 12 hearts dangling from the branches. Over the past year more than 1,000 shirts, hats, prints, hoodies, mugs, and decals with the design were sold to members of the community as part of the school’s fundraising efforts. Thanks in part to these efforts, a check for $2,000 was presented to the nonprofit Give An Hour, which provides free mental health support to the survivors and families of mass shootings, and has aided many Borderline survivors and families this past year.

After the assembly’s conclusion students had the opportunity to participate in a “Touch a Truck” featuring unique vehicles from a variety of agencies.

Way to go Banyan! This event is a great example of how the school focuses on creating community minded citizens.
