CVUSD Teachers and Certificated Staff Attended Professional Learning Day on August 19th in Newbury Park
Elementary and Secondary teachers and certificated staff attended a Professional Learning Day at Newbury Park High School on Monday, August 19th.
The training included a keynote presentation with Dr. Katie Novak, as well as breakout sessions for staff. Training focused on increasing academic access for all students with Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a way of thinking about teaching and learning that helps give all students an equal opportunity to succeed. UDL is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.
Dr. Novak used the analogy of having a dinner party--and serving tuna noodle casserole--not all dinner guests will enjoy the selected dish. She illustrated this analogy to demonstrate that there is no "one size fits all" to meet the needs of every student. The goal of UDL is to create learners who are purposeful & motivated, resourceful & knowledgeable and strategic & goal-oriented--in other words, expert learners!
Thank you Dr. Novak for sharing your insights with CVUSD teachers and certificated staff today. We look forward to an academic year full of growth and success for our students!
