It's Full STEAM Ahead for Ladera's STARS Academy

There will be a new STEAM magnet school destination in the Conejo Valley beginning August 2018: Ladera’s STARS Academy – STARS stands for Science, Technology, Arts and Rigorous Scholarship.

As a STEAM focused magnet school, Ladera’s STARS Academy will immerse its K-5 students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.

From now until the start of the 2018-2019 school year, the Ladera Elementary campus, located at 1211 Calle Almendro in Thousand Oaks, will undergo a physical transformation as well as an educational transition to a new STEAM-centric learning model.

A brand new Discovery Lab will be unveiled to meet students’ science, technology and engineering passions. This state-of-the-art Lab will be a Makerspace and a dedicated flexible learning environment for science and creative instruction experiences. An Outdoor Lab, including the Ladera garden, is also being developed on the campus’s grounds.

Ladera students in a star“The driving question behind the development of STARS Academy and its instruction model was: what motivates students to learn and succeed?” said Lori Wall, Principal of Ladera’s STARS Academy. “Our vision is to build on the natural curiosity and creativity of children in order to motivate and engage them as scholars.”

STARS will use a Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) driven curriculum with thematic instruction and project based learning to achieve academic success for its students.

Technology at the school will include a 1:1 initiative, with the campus moving towards technology devices for every student. Digital citizenship and media literacy will be a key focus as students’ apply technology based presentation, collaboration and research skills across their coursework. Unique computer coding, gaming and robotic opportunities will also be available to students.

Students will experience the arts and design through STARS’ unique “Creation Rotations” program and integrated arts instruction. The program includes explorations in visual, digital and performing arts disciplines, as well as Makerspace. Talent and artwork will be on display throughout the year at special performances and showcases, giving STARS’ students a stage on which to shine.

Rigorous academics along with Ladera’s California Gold Ribbon Award winning Target Time program, will also be a key features of the day to day learning to support the educational growth of scholars at all achievement levels.

Ladera’s STARS Academy is a CVUSD Neighborhood School, with general registration for families beginning on February 1, 2018. Students residing outside of Ladera’s Neighborhood School attendance boundaries may apply to enroll in Ladera’s STARS Academy via the School Choice process. School Choice applications are available January 3, 2018. Priority is given to school choice applications received by February 1, 2018. Students living outside of CVUSD's boundaries of residence may apply to enroll in Ladera's STARS Academy via the Inter-District Transfer process. Inter-District Transfer applications are available January 3, 2018. Priority is given to Inter-District Transfer applications received prior to February 1, 2018.
